Complex systems such as agriculture and land management can be overwhelming to ensure you’re making the best decisions for the land, your family, and your bank account. Dealing with this complexity calls for a holistic approach. Holistic management provides a framework for decision-making that gives you the power to make decisions to improve your economic, ecological, and social futures. Holistic management can equip you to develop a clear vision of the future of your “whole” property and make decisions that not only improve yields, but regenerate your land to ensure continuous land viability for future generations. 

The Holistic Management framework was developed by Allan Savory, co-founder of the Savory Institute, as an approach to help farmers, ranchers, land managers, and more develop strategies for regenerating degraded landscapes and the livelihoods of the people living on them. This method was originally developed for planning livestock grazing in a way that enabled farmers to simulate the effects wild herds once produced on the land. The goal of this work was, and still is, to stop the spread of desertification, but the framework developed can be used to better manage any situation that involves a web of social, economic, and environmental complexity. 

The Ottawa Conservation District will be hosting a Holistic Management Foundations Workshop on March 22nd, 2023, from 9 AM – 12 PM. We will be meeting at the Olive Township Hall located at 6480 136th Ave in Holland, MI. This workshop, led by Kyle Hildebrandt, a Savory Institute Accredited Professional, will expose participants to what Holistic Management is and what it can do for farmers, their land, and their finances. By the end of the workshop, participants will be equipped with a solid foundation to begin practicing Holistic Management and will learn about additional resources to ensure continued success, including additional  trainings offered by Michigan State University and resources available through OCD’s Farmland & Water Quality Conservation Initiative.
